OasisN7th b/w Bedford and Driggs
Today I went to Oasis, a middle joint right by the Bedford L. On their front door is a tear-out from the Village Voice proclaiming them to be ‘MOST AWESOME MIDDLE EASTERN’ which sounds ESOL but I think was just meant as a superlative.
I’ve been before for the falafels, which are pretty good, maybe a 6/10, but today I just wanted some sides. So here in front of me I have rice & beans, pickles, and (the belle at this ball) some carrots with garlic. I also bought the chili & garlic variation of rooster sauce, which is new to me. I will eat these things now and report on them in real time.
Rice & beansDry. A slow burn on the salt, actually. No surprises. I’d say a very good 1am companion to a glass of scotch, if you don’t mind the heartburn.
PicklesI like middle eastern pickles because they don’t dick around on the garlic.
CarrotsYES! Oh yes this is the stuff right here. Soft & soaking in a liquid that I can only assume is carrot juice infused with garlic. A dessert here. Spread liberally on everything.
Now I will try things together.
Chili & garlic rooster sauceHo boy I just took a big sloppy forkful of the stuff, for some reason not thinking about how hot sauce is hot. Very tasty. Needs more garlic.
Rice & PicklesEhn I mean this rice could use pickles, it’s true, but it’s no more of a meal for it

Carrots & Rooster sauceOh, fantastic. Unexpectedly. The natural carrot sugars cut the hot sauce very nicely.
